What this is

A week in Lisbon on a real budget, alone. Which neighborhoods are worth the rent, how to eat properly for a few euros, the transport that tourists overpay for, the viewpoints that are free, and how to have company when you want it without booking anything.

Who wrote it

Lisbon is cheaper than its reputation if you eat where people eat on a Tuesday. The tourist calculation, roughly: a sit-down lunch in a place with a paper tablecloth and a handwritten daily menu costs about a third of a dinner in the same neighborhood with a printed one. The food is often the same food.

The hills are not a joke and they will decide your trip. A room that looks central on a map can be twenty minutes of climbing from anywhere you want to be, twice a day, in the heat. When comparing places to stay, check the elevation, not just the distance.

Traveling alone here is easy in one specific way: eating alone at a counter is completely normal and nobody will treat you as a problem to be seated.
